The major aim of guidance and counselling as a course is to encourage the students’ academic, social and their emotional development.  The course also helps the students to know their skills and personality to help in choosing their future career. Guidance and counselling assist the youth in solving their personal problems. According to the history of guidance and counselling in Ghana, D.O.K Dankwa is known as the father of guidance and counselling in Ghana.

  D.O.K Dankwa was not the only person who contributed most in the establishment of guidance and counselling in Ghana. The following individuals assisted D.O.K Dankwa in his work towards the establishment of guidance and counselling in Ghana.

* Nathaniel Kofi Pecku:

Nathaniel Kofi Pecku was a lecturer who devoted his time to help in distributing the teachings of guidance and counselling in Ghana. He was a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (U.C.C) from the early 1970`s to 1990`s. Lecturer Nathaniel Kofi Pecku assisted in the introduction of guidance and counselling courses in the undergraduate education programs.  

* Professor Cooke:

This Professor was a Canadian who started the teaching of guidance and counselling at the University of Cape Coast.  Prof. Cooke teachings were mainly found in the undergraduate studies, Diploma in Advanced Studies and Post Graduate Certificate of Education.

*  J. Opoku

J. Opoku helped in writing articles about guidance and counselling to be published in newspapers. Furthermore, J. Opoku made the public to know the important of guidance and counselling to the country (Ghana).

* Joseph Kpakpoe Allotey and E.T Akwettey served as the civil servant in the Curriculum Research Development Unit (CROU). They acted as the national coordinators of guidance and counselling.

* J.K Okyere, J.K Nimo and S.K   Atakpa were the three lectures who helped in organization of the lepa vocational program and also, distributing lectures in the program.

The training of guidance and counselling began at the University of Cape Coast (U.C.C).
